What to Wear for Engagement Photos in Knoxville: Outfit Ideas That Actually Look Good on Camera

January 31, 2025

Choosing what to wear for your engagement photos in Knoxville can feel overwhelming, especially when you want your photos to look timeless and natural. However, your outfit plays a huge role in how your images turn out. Because of this, I always guide my brides to choose pieces that photograph well and complement the environment.

Stick to Solid Colors Instead of Prints

First of all, I always recommend wearing solid colors for your engagement session. Patterns, logos, and busy prints can easily distract from your faces and emotions in the photos. In addition, certain prints may clash with natural backgrounds or create visual noise in your images.

As a result, solid colors help keep the focus on your connection rather than your clothing.

Choose Colors That Match the Location

Your outfit should also reflect the location you choose for your engagement session. For example, if you plan to take photos in a park or nature setting during the summer, Knoxville will likely have plenty of greenery.

Because of this, I usually suggest warm neutral tones such as:

  • brown
  • beige
  • cream
  • off white
  • khaki

These colors complement green backgrounds and prevent your skin tones from looking washed out. On the other hand, very bright or neon shades may compete with the natural surroundings.

Layer for Texture

For fall and winter engagement photos in Knoxville, I always recommend layering your outfits. Cozy sweaters, structured coats, scarves, and knit fabrics add beautiful texture and dimension to your photos — while keeping you warm.

Choose Earthy Colors

My favorite color palette for cold weather sessions includes dark browns, warm beiges, rust orange, and other earthy tones. These shades complement the Smoky Mountain landscape perfectly and create a timeless, romantic look.

Avoid Bright Tones

Try to avoid neon or overly bright colors. Earthy, warm tones photograph much more naturally and blend beautifully with East Tennessee scenery.

Use the Color Wheel for a Balanced Look

Another helpful tip is to look at the color wheel when planning your outfits. Opposite colors tend to complement each other well in photos. Therefore, coordinating tones between partners can create a balanced and cohesive appearance without looking too “matchy.”

For a casual look, you can wear jeans with a light neutral top. Meanwhile, dress pants paired with a blouse or dress can create a more elevated and romantic style with some jewelry.

Adjust Your Outfit for Downtown Sessions

If your engagement photos take place in downtown Knoxville, you can choose slightly lighter or more structured outfits. For instance, a button-up shirt, tailored pants, or a simple dress can create a business casual or editorial look that fits the city vibe.

Regardless of location, I would still recommend avoiding very bright colors or heavy prints.

Look for Inspiration Before Your Session

Before your session, consider browsing Pinterest for outfit inspiration that matches your chosen location and season. This can help you visualize how different tones and textures photograph in natural light.
