It also ensures you have enough time for portraits without rushing. As a Knoxville wedding photographer, I always help couples create timelines that feel relaxed and natural. However, before you build your wedding day timeline, start by checking the sunset time for your wedding date. Sunset changes a lot throughout the year in East Tennessee. For example, winter weddings have much earlier sunsets, so your ceremony usually needs to start earlier in the day. Meanwhile, summer weddings in Tennessee bring later sunsets and warmer temperatures. Because of that, many couples choose later ceremony times and begin their celebrations in the late afternoon.

Your timeline depends on several important decisions. First, you need to decide whether you want to do a first look. Some couples love the private moment before the ceremony. Meanwhile, more traditional couples prefer to see each other at the aisle. Your timeline also depends on whether you plan private vows or exchanging gifts. Many couples choose to share these moments before the ceremony. Because of that, we need to build extra time into the schedule. Family portraits also affect the timeline. If your family is large, photos will take longer. However, I often recommend focusing on immediate family first, so you still have time for sunset portraits. Once you decide these details, building your timeline becomes much easier.

8-Hour Wedding Day Timeline Example

Here is a common example of an 8-hour timeline.

• 1:00 PM – Getting Ready Photos

• 2:00 PM – Detail Photos

• 3:00 PM – First Look

• 3:15 PM – Private Vows or Gifts

• 3:30 PM – Wedding Party Portraits

• 4:30 PM – Family Formals

• 5:30 PM – Ceremony

• 6:00 PM – Cocktail Hour

• 6:45 PM – Sunset Portraits

• 7:30 PM – Reception Begins

• 10:00 PM – Exit

Because many portraits happen earlier in the day, couples often enjoy more time with guests during the reception.

6-Hour Wedding Timeline Example

A six-hour timeline usually works best for smaller weddings.

Most couples skip the first look in this case. Therefore, portraits take place after the ceremony. Family photos and wedding party portraits also move quickly, so planning ahead becomes important.

Is 6 hours enough for a wedding?

Six hours can absolutely be enough for many Knoxville weddings, especially if your timeline is well planned. However, it does require intentional scheduling.

If you want full getting ready coverage and a grand exit, 8 hours is usually more comfortable. If you prefer ceremony through reception highlights only, 6 hours may be perfect.

When should sunset photos happen in Knoxville?

In Knoxville, sunset timing changes throughout the year.

• Summer sunsets: around 8:30–9:00 PM

• Fall sunsets: around 6:30–7:30 PM

• Winter sunsets: around 5:00–5:30 PM

Golden hour portraits should happen about 30 minutes before sunset for the most flattering light. In the Smoky Mountains especially, light can disappear faster because of the hills.
