Gatlinburg Photography: A Surprise Proposal at the Overlook

Let me tell you the sweetest story about Richard and his surprise proposal at one of my favorite places—the Gatlinburg Overlook. If you’re planning a proposal and need a photographer in Gatlinburg, you’re going to love this one!

The Inquiry That Made My Day

Richard first reached out to me at the beginning of 2025. Right after the new year, he told me he had looked through many photographers in Gatlinburg, but he loved my work the most. That honestly meant so much to me.

He shared that he wanted to propose to his beautiful girlfriend during their vacation in Gatlinburg, TN. The only thing? He had never been here before and needed help figuring out the best spot.

Family Plans and a Sweet Surprise

As we kept talking, I found out that both of their families would be traveling from Miami. He really wanted everyone together for the big moment—how thoughtful is that? I just loved his idea!

Since they had a big group (including grandparents!) and planned a fancy dinner after the proposal, I knew we needed a location that was close to town and easy to access. That’s why I suggested the Gatlinburg Overlook. You get a stunning mountain view without a hike. Honestly, it was perfect.

We agreed it had to be a total surprise. This time, I had to play the role of a friendly tourist photographer named Ariel who just happened to be out taking mountain pictures—haha!

Prepping for the Big Day

From the moment we locked it in, Richard stayed on top of every detail. He’d check in often to confirm timing and logistics. I could tell how much this meant to him. He wanted it to be absolutely perfect—and I was right there with him!

A Slight Delay… But Totally Worth It

The day finally came! I got to the overlook early and started watching the cars roll in. A few pulled up, and I scanned every one.

Suddenly, one car turned around and drove off. My heart dropped a little. Then I got a text—his girlfriend had forgotten her phone, and her brother drove her back to get it. Noooo, I gasped to myself. But honestly, thank goodness her brother knew how to drive fast—they were back in 15 minutes!

And this is another reason I love the overlook so much—it’s super close to everything. Delays like this don’t mess up the plan!

The Moment Arrives

As soon as they returned, I spotted them walking toward the overlook, casually snapping photos of each other. That was my cue. I walked up with my camera and said, “Do you want a photo of the whole group?” Richard smiled and said, “Yes, please, that would be amazing.”

I grabbed his phone and started taking a few pictures. Then I told his girlfriend, “I have a pose in mind! Just turn around, and he’ll hug you from behind.”

I don’t know what it is, but women always trust me in those moments—and somehow it always works out perfectly. She turned, he dropped to one knee, and… just like that, they were engaged!!!

Cheers, Hugs, and Happy Tears

Tears, hugs, kisses—everyone started shouting and clapping. It was honestly one of the most joyful proposals I’ve ever been part of.

This is exactly why I love what I do. Helping couples plan unforgettable moments like this brings me so much joy. Proposing in Gatlinburg, surrounded by your family and the mountains? You really can’t beat that.
