Cades cove Elopment

Smoky mountains elopement

January 31, 2025

How It All Started

Taylor reached out about four months before her Smoky Mountains elopement, and right away, I could tell she had a vision. She wanted to get married in Cades Cove, surrounded by her closest friends and family. Because she sent me some of my own photos as inspiration, I knew she had already been dreaming of this moment for a while.

From the beginning, she had specific spots in mind. Not surprisingly, her favorites were Wildlife Overlook and LeQuire Cemetery Overlook—two of the most peaceful and scenic areas on the Cades Cove loop road. Clearly, this wasn’t just about pretty pictures. This was about heart.

Even better, Taylor shared that they’d be bringing their baby girl. Since her mom would be there to help during portraits, she could fully enjoy the day without worry. Right then, I started planning the flow of their perfect, low-stress elopement.

Planning With Heart

Once Taylor booked, we started planning all the details. First, I reminded her about the special use permit. Anyone getting married in the national park will need one, and getting it ahead of time helps everything stay on track.

As we moved forward, Taylor reached out again to talk about her detail shots. She had a few meaningful items she wanted included, so I made sure we carved out time for those in the timeline. Honestly, those personal touches make every gallery more emotional.

Because she also needed a makeup artist and videographer, I gave her my top Smoky Mountain vendor recommendations. Since I’ve worked with so many great creatives in the Gatlinburg area, I knew exactly who would show up ready to serve and support her day.

Meeting Up in Townsend

On the morning of the elopement, the weather was absolutely perfect—sunny with a bit of cloud cover. That kind of light always gives photos a dreamy, soft glow. Before heading into the park, we met in Townsend, as I always recommend. There’s no cell service on the Cades Cove loop road, so meeting beforehand makes sure no one gets lost.

Once everyone arrived, the vibe was calm and joyful. Since elopements can feel a little unpredictable, this easy start helped set the tone for the whole experience.

A Warm Family Circle

As soon as we met, I could feel the love between them all. Taylor’s parents, her brother, her twin sisters, and of course, her sweet baby girl—all showed up fully present and happy to celebrate.

Although elopements are small, they still feel incredibly rich. Because there’s no pressure, no production, and no guests you don’t actually know, they bring out the best moments naturally.

Entering the Cove

Before we began, we picked up parking passes and started exploring the Cades Cove loop road. As always, I had a few favorite photo spots in mind, but I made sure to include all of Taylor’s picks too.

We made stops at several historic churches, including the Missionary Baptist Church, the Primitive Baptist Church, and the Methodist Church. Each one has its own rustic charm, and we took time to soak in their quiet beauty.

Surprisingly, as we were exploring, we even spotted three black bears climbing trees. That’s definitely not something you see every day—what a bonus!

A Private Vow Exchange

Taylor and her partner chose to share their vows inside the Primitive Baptist Church, and it was one of the most emotional moments of the day. While her parents waited outside, they took time alone inside the rustic church to speak their hearts.

Because it was just the two of them, the moment felt sacred. No audience, no pressure—just love. I stayed quiet and documented from the corner, giving them space to be fully in it.

Portraits at Wildlife Overlook

After vows, we headed to the Wildlife Overlook, one of the most scenic views in all of Cades Cove. The rolling hills, soft light, and quiet breeze made it feel almost surreal.

Since Taylor and her partner were still glowing from their vows, every shot felt authentic and joyful. This overlook never fails to deliver something special.

A Surprise at LeQuire Cemetery Overlook

To end their adventure, we drove to the LeQuire Cemetery Overlook, which was the perfect final stop. While we were wrapping up portraits, Taylor’s brother got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend—right there on her wedding day!

Of course, she said yes! It was such a beautiful and unexpected bonus. Two celebrations in one afternoon? Yes, please!

The Perfect Smoky Mountains Elopement

Everything about Taylor’s day felt just right. It was calm, personal, emotional, and full of connection. That’s what makes being a Smoky Mountains elopement photographer so rewarding—no two stories are ever the same, and every couple brings something unique.

Although the setting is always beautiful, it’s the people and emotions that make these days unforgettable.
