Is Raining on Your Wedding Day Good Luck
January 31, 2025
Let me tell you about one of the most heartwarming weddings I’ve photographed—Chloe and Jason’s cozy backyard celebration. From the moment Chloe booked me as their wedding photographer, I knew their day would be special. Not only had I already photographed their gorgeous engagement session on Roan Mountain, but they also planned to get married at her parents’ home in Johnson City, TN. I mean—how sweet is that?
Starting the Day at Home
When I pulled up to Chloe’s childhood home, I could already tell this wedding would be something magical. Her mom had decorated everything so beautifully—greenery everywhere, earthy tones, and just the right amount of charm. A big white tent stood ready in the backyard, just in case. And honestly, when it comes to backyard weddings, it doesn’t get much better than this.
Chloe booked six hours of coverage, which ended up being perfect. Since she wanted to share her private vows with Jason before the ceremony, we scheduled a first look. That decision made the day flow so smoothly. We got all the couple portraits done right after, and the weather was still holding up.
Private Vows and First Look Moments
The first look was everything. Just the two of them under a quiet tree, sharing words they’ll remember forever. Right after their vows, I snapped their portraits—and good thing I did. Because not long after, the sky started to rumble.
I heard someone whisper, “Is raining on your wedding day good luck?” I smiled and said, “Of course it is!” And honestly, I meant it. There’s something magical about a little sprinkle during a ceremony. It adds to the story in the best way.

A Ceremony Under the Trees
The ceremony took place beneath a giant tree in the front yard. We started just 15 minutes behind schedule—not bad at all! As Chloe walked down the aisle, the clouds were rolling in, and thunder hummed in the background. It didn’t pour (thank goodness), but it did sprinkle. Still, no one minded. We were all wrapped up in the moment.
And yes, we had a huge tree to protect us just in case. Right after the “I do’s,” I quickly gathered everyone for family photos. Not a moment too soon—because suddenly the rain came down hard, and we all dashed for the house laughing!
Rain, Laughter, and So Much Love
The storm didn’t last long, and honestly? It was a relief. The rain cooled everything off, and guests made their way to the tent to keep the party going. Chloe and Jason’s celebration felt even more joyful because of that little summer shower.
And you know what? I think the saying is true: Is raining on your wedding day good luck? For Chloe and Jason, absolutely yes.
A Night Full of Emotion and Celebration
Once everyone settled under the tent, the reception kicked off with so much joy—dancing, heartfelt speeches, and some truly emotional moments. One of the sweetest highlights? Jason’s grandmother traveled all the way from Taiwan to be there. Can you imagine how far that is?! And Chloe’s own grandmother was there too—she’s 83 and absolutely full of energy. She even danced, and let me tell you, it was one of the cutest moments of the night!
Then came the tears. Chloe’s dad, who happens to be a published author (how cool is that?), wrote a special poem just for her. When he read it aloud, you could feel the whole tent go quiet. There wasn’t a dry eye in sight.
Jason’s dad also shared his heartfelt wishes in Chinese, and his mom translated them beautifully for everyone. The love and connection between both families made this wedding feel extra special.
Ending the Night with a Sparkle
We ended the night with cake, twinkle lights, and a magical sparkler send-off. It might have rained, but this day felt perfect in every way. Chloe and Jason’s wedding reminded me that sometimes the unexpected things—like rain—turn into the most unforgettable memories.
So if you’re wondering, is raining on your wedding day good luck? After this one, I’d say yes, a thousand times yes.
